Hiking along the gorge

We live in an area surrounded by spectacular gorges with four state parks that showcase many of them. Bonus: they are all within a 30 minute drive from our home. Yes, we are very fortunate. Of course, I try my best to take advantage of these amazing hiking opportunities that are so close to home. The other day, after dropping Mathew off at camp, I decided to take a morning hike in Watkins Glen State Park. I hiked along Glen Creek, which is carving out the gorge. It is a fairly short trail, but, within two miles, the Glen Creek descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, and generating 19 waterfalls along its course. It is quite magical to say the least.

I just have to share some of the pictures I took along the way.

Where is the justice?

The other day, I woke up on the negative, pessimistic side of life. It seemed like evil, injustice, greed, ignorance and hatred were winning. I try my best to see the good things happening but sometimes I only feel assaulted by the bad. Some mornings I fear for our future. It is hard to believe that we can turn things around. Then I came across this quote by Martin Luther King Jr. and can only hope and pray that he is right.

Nevertheless, after Trayvon Martin’s killer recently went free. And, in May, Marissa Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison for firing warning shots in the air to deter her abusive husband, I fear that we may need to wait a very long time to see the true light of justice shine through. I hope I am wrong.

Then, I came across this video that showed the reaction of children, our future leaders, to a Cheerios commercial that so many people were upset about.

Perhaps there is hope for our future. May the children in this video inherit our earth. We need more love and understanding to allow justice to shine through.
