Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus)
Lion's mane mushroom, also known as monkey head, bearded tooth, satyr's beard, bearded hedgehog, pom pom, or bearded tooth mushroom, is an edible mushroom belonging to the tooth fungus group. Native to North America, Europe and Asia, it can be identified by its long spines, occurrence on hardwoods (esp beech), and tendency to grow a single clump of dangling spines. The fruiting bodies are harvested for culinary and medicinal use.
We are cultivating lion’s mane on beech totems that yield mushrooms in late summer and early fall. As we continue to work with this unique fungus, we will also experiment with propagating G. tsugae on hemlock.
