Orchard, Vineyard, and Farm Consultations
Mike offers consultations for small, medium, and large growers. His consulting philosophy is ‘regenerative’ using organic, biodynamic, and holistic principles and practices. Crop focus is primarily, but not limited to apples, pears, stone fruit, “other” tree fruit, small fruit, and grapes, though he dabbles in vegetable crops, cannabis, and livestock as elements of a broader, ecosystem-focused, integrated farmscape.
As a career-long grower, his capacity for helping budding farmers get started, developing revitalizing and management plans, solving problems without the use of toxic chemicals and fertilizers, and transitioning to holistic farming practices is unparalleled. As a novice grower and budding horticulture student in 1984, and while working at a large commercial orchard, it didn’t take him long to realize just how damaging conventional farming was to the environment. Mike has been on a path of sustainable farming ever since – that was 40 years ago.
Today, he farms and works with principles and practices of holistic and biodynamic principles and practices that rely heavily on the concept of ‘vitalism’. Vitalism is the concept that farming interactively with the natural farmscape using natural techniques such as plant and compost teas, biodynamic preparations, regenerative, and holistic practices that help create a healthy resilient agricultural environment with reverence for all life including the farmer and customer.
How do you get started?
Option A. Online/Remote. Growers (you) purchase blocks of consulting time here (see below "Buy Now" button). Then we pre-schedule consultations in 1-hour increments. Pricing is $125 per hour in minimum 2-hour blocks with video or audio calls pre-scheduled, and limited follow-up and communication.
Option B. Out-of-Region/Small Growers. Flat fee per year with consultations beginning in March and running through October, up to a 1-hour call per week, all calls are via Zoom and prescheduled for same day and time. Pricing is $2000 ($2200 on installment plan) per season with weekly 45-minute video or audio calls pre-scheduled, and limited follow-up and communication (e.g., emails, phone calls, etc.). Installment payments. First payment of $1100 due by March 1st and 2nd payment due by July 1st. Site visits and third-party expenses are additional costs and quoted per grower.
Option C. Seasonal Contracts. For growers with medium and large acreages that want more hands-on consulting services throughout the season within my normal consulting region (Finger Lakes, Catskills, Hudson Valley, central New Jersey). Arrangements are quoted per grower and based on service expectations and requirements, and travel. This is a full-service consulting arrangement where I visit each grower on a weekly or biweekly basis (per agreement), conduct thorough farm scouting, provide spray, fertility and nutritional recommendations, as well as advice and recommendations on most horticultural activities and tasks that lead to successful crops.
All on-site visits, travel, and third-party expenses are additional costs unless otherwise agreed. Pricing quoted on a case-by-case basis.
